I've been watching really good tv. I finished all 5 seasons of HBO's The Wire and the miniseries John Adams.

The Wire is epic television. It is a commentary on what is happening in our world and has left me with so many questions and some despair. What an education I got from watching that show. Season 4 and 1 are tied for my favorite, then season 3.

John Adams is a really great miniseries 7 episodes long with embellishments on one of the Founding Fathers of the US. who was also their 2nd President. The show is so steam punk. Very Cool. And really interesting. I found the world history during that period fascinating. I wish historical television shows would mention that these dramas are very loosely based on historical events. I am watching The Tudors now which is an embellishment of King Henry the 8th's rein. Also loosely based on historical events. I will say that it does make me read more about history to see how accurate shows are and how much they go off track from real history.

I finished reading Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game. I enjoyed the book and the fictional account of the Glass Bead Game was something I wondered on. I read somewhere that Hesse imagined his story was set around the 25th century. Whoa. Because I used to play piano, I really appreciated and admired the way Music is described and respected in this book. Anyway, I'm still have to read the last part of the book which consists of poetry and short stories.

It's finished!!! And the colours are so much more brilliant than this terrible and low quality scan.
My favourite thing about this painting is how the mermaid's expression came out so serene...

Art Collaboration with Judy Boardman part V

Okay, I guess I got carried away and forgot to make a scan before it got to this point...These are the very first layers of watercolour paint. Things look flat at this point. The colours, the shapes, everything. I've started shading with cobalt blue and highlighting with some rose dore for the mermaid's skin then washed over everything with yellow ocher. I've also started indicating some of the background elements with more defined shapes. Whatever bleed I was losing my mind over has now been resolved. I've incorporated the bleeding ink into the watery paint. Thank goodness! Judy's art looks even more amazing with colours added!

Working through the email i've neglected over the past couple weeks. I'm down to 56 emails. wo'hoo... back on track soon I ~~think~~ hope.

OMG... is all I could think when I touched wet brush to paper... I must have been on crack when I was at the art store because I didn't buy a waterproof black marker. D'OH!

I almost cried...then remembered all the brown ink was indeed done with waterproof ink and felt a tremendous relief!!! phew!!! After that, I just decided to work with the bleeding. It's an underwater illustration anyway so a little watery-ness won't be too bad, right? That's all I could hope for at this point. I almost had a heart attack because I thought I ruined the Judy's art!!

OMG! Raptors took the Nets 106-69! o____O wo'hoo!

Art Collaboration with Artsygoddess part III

Phew!! No major mistakes! I'm so relieved! In fact I am almost pleased with the results! There is no way I could have inked this well if it was not for Judy's gorgeous drawing and her skillz. Her body proportions are so accurate and the mermaid's pose so graceful. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that!

I think I am often guilty of "manga"-ing my illustrated characters. It's a style I suppose I've developed, however, it has turned into a very bad habit. I think that was one of the things that really rubbed my life drawing teacher the wrong way. I mean, not like the time he screamed, "YOU WRECKED YOUR DRAWING!!!!" at me then angrily stomped away kind of "rubbed the wrong way", but still this bad habit of mine must have troubled him quite a bit. And no wonder. It has certainly become a curse at times and at others, quite a lovely accident... But I'd still prefer it if I did do life drawing accurately and not so stylized sometimes....

That's what practice is for, right?

Well, now that I'm a little too far away from Toronto School of Art for open Life Drawing, I'm going to have to find another studio or skool that I can maybe bike to. Has to be less than $10 a session. Otherwise I might have to resort to doing life drawing self-portraits in the mirror and jeezzz... i sure don't want to have to resort to that...i already don't like posing for reference photos and i don't like painting or drawing from photos...

Our high dollar...oh how it has been a blessing and a curse! My whole business structure must now re-adapt...

We don't have cable...I didn't care until the Raptors started playing again!!! Here's the cracked out part... since when the hells did I start caring about NBA basketball?!?

Art Collaboration with Artsygoddess part II

I had to think long and hard about what I wanted to with Judy's drawing. Because she used really heavy paper with lots of tooth, I considered using a more water-downed acrylic paint and try to use it like I do with my paintings on canvas. But after some thinking, I thought that it would not be a good idea because I tend to layer quite heavily. With many heavy layers, I wasn't sure if the paper could handle it and I wasn't about to find out. Instead I went for the good ol' panned watercolours. I figured the paper could take a lot of layering and the washes may be more brilliant with so many layers.

Painting this with watercolours means inking the drawing as well. Of all the things related to art, I think inking is the most challenging for me. I do tend to mess up and I've ruined many a potential painting with my lousy inking skills. And of course, this also meant I had to pick an inking instrument. Do I dare go old skool and use the dip pen and an open bottle of ink on this textured paper? Too risky, I thought. So I thought a marker would be better.

It didn't take me long to decide how I wanted to ink this painting. I thought I would go art nouveau with brown and black marker. So, I started with the brown sakura. I always start inking on the minor elements of the artwork so I can find my pacing for smooth lines before attempting the figure or the main focus. I decided to outline in black, but my black marker had died...

One of the most bestest things about my new location is that the art store is just down the street!!! I can walk there or bike there anytime I want! No more TTC downtown just to buy something like a black marker! I also picked up some blank cards and an eraser. Art supply shopping is about the only shopping I don't really mind too much...phew!

Sea Gods Artist Collaboration with Judy Boardman a.k.a. artsygoddess part I

In the past, I've always hesitated to do any kind of artist collaboration because I found that it was filled with conflict but I realize that was a product of our maturity or lack of it...

As with my art, I think I've grown more mature and I think it shows in this collaboration with the very talented artsygoddess I'm delighted with how it turned out and I hope she is too!

Judy illustrated her beautiful original drawing on a really heavy piece of watercolour paper. It was very thick like cardboard and was very textured with lots of "tooth". I've never painted or drawn on such good quality paper before and I think this is why I hesitated for so long before I actually got down to starting my half of the collaboration which is the painting part of the delicate drawing.

I really didn't want to mess this up. First of all, it's another person's original artwork!!! I was very nervous that I would "wreck" it somehow with my inexperience. Second, it's a damn fine drawing! If I goofed, then the drawing might not even be saved... you can see how concerned I was! And third, well, it's on nice paper so I certainly didn't want to ruin the investment Judy has put in me. Both her amazing talent, artwork, generous materials, and most of all her time.

It's hard to tell from the crappy scan but the lines are quite delicate and soft. There's a lot of movement in the hair and underwater foliage. I think this compliments her pose very well and I like how her tail's texture contrasts against her figure. I like Judy's composition too and how the cave's opening frames the whole setting. Little details like the coral and fish add to the magic and sets the tone for how all the figures relate to each other... it seems like everyone is kinda minding their own business in another lovely day in the underwater fantasy world of Judy Boardman. All the character's expressions are quite serene and I wanted to evoke that same kind of feeling with colour. It's like a distant and soft admiration of fantasy.

Okay, I'm getting ready to come back to lj and the internets again so in order to make efficient use of time, I've decided to consolidate. So I'll be transferring content from the old blog and elseware over to this blog and finally be able to delete all those accounts. I've gotten rid of the ebay store and cafe press because I think I've finally realized the potential of possibilites that the Hidden Gallery has and it certainly has forced me to refine its direction and goals.

The new place has a room for an office/studio where I've hung a huge map of the world on the wall so I can mark all the places my art has found homes in around the world... and all the places I still want to visit...

Oh, and we're expecting ghoulish visitors this evening for the first time. So Larv has hid all the chocolate from me since yesterday...

Another reason I've gotten rid of the ebay store is that I just can't log into some areas of the site since their upgrade. For the last 3 weeks I've been communicating with their tech support and guess what? Since my last email a week ago, I have yet to receive a response. Such bad tech support and no, it's not my browser, os, security, blah, blah, blah, ebay... it's on your end, ebay... it seems like ebay is missing a little piece of data associated with my account that would solve my problem. How do I know? My tech guy told me...

Speaking of tech issues, LJ keeps crashing my firefox so I've resorted to using Safari to post entries. I noticed it started happening the other day. Anyone else having problems or is it on my end? coz my html sucks...and I still have so much to catch up on with you guys... brb... and with art next time... promise...

Long Time No Post

OMG

The last 2 months have been crazy. So what was that good news I had? We've finally moved. The bad news? Renovations took way longer than expected. Move in date was for July 1st but had to move it back to the 15th because the washroom was not finished. Guess what? It's still not finished. Thank god Khai was generous enough to offer his shower several times over the last couple weeks.

The plumber was utterly useless but what is worse is the lying and the deceit. When called out on the lying, he got angry and started yelling and would not leave when asked. Get this.... I had to call 911 before the guy would leave. Absolutely appalling behaviour. I have documented 4 pages of their wrong-doings, threats and lies and have taken pictures of what they've done to our washroom.

Enough about that (for now)... I mean, at least we didn't find a dead baby from the 1920's during renovations, right? right? And at least we've got the good folks at the Holmes on Homes forum to ask questions to.

The internet connection is finally consistent but the computer and art materials are still scare around here because of the huge amounts of dust and I just don't want to put those things at risk.

There is still no washroom and there isn't a kitchen. What have I gotten myself into?! How does Ellen (
ellenmillion) do it?! Oh, I know! She is amazing and fantastical.

With desperate efforts, it will be nothing but working and fixing up the place so that life can get back to normal as quickly as possible without any more dust, damage and headache. We've got a toilet at least so no longer do I have to pee surreptitiously in the backyard. Hey, got to look for and appreciate all the positives, right?

And because of this craziness, art is on hold as are auctions and new online listings for the time being.

Hey, at least there's air conditioning here. I am truly grateful for that.

There's no cable. I was lucky that my old landlord provided that for free and I am in no hurry to hook it up when there is no time to sit and watch tv, but I do miss watching Jon Stewart although the last couple times I watched it, it was so painful even his comedy could not dampen the severity of evil from BUSHCO. I couldn't even take the truth from one of my favourite commentators never mind actually having to live through the atrocities he speaks about. Whatever I feel, it utterly pales in comparison to the suffering of others who are dying. How can their despair continue?

And I don't understand why the American people aren't able to stop BUSHCO from further damaging their country and their constitutional rights for an illegal war. Lot's of chicken hawks on the BUSHCO team.

Dad has been angry with the Korean Christian community regarding all that's happened with the 21 South Korean hostages of the Taliban. He has very little sympathy for a group of aggressive evangelical Christians going into another country and trying to convert Muslims under the guise of humanitarian aid. It's sick. The arrogance of those church groups is disgusting. And that's what they've been trying to do, I'm told. These Christian Korean churches get all high and mighty and actually compete with each other to see who sends the most Christian missionaries to the Middle East for bragging rights. BRAGGING RIGHTS. No, I kid you not.

Dad is himself a Christian but does not believe in the aggressive tactics of evangelicals. Everyone has a right to their own religion and everyone has the right not to have a religion imposed on them. How dare one religious group criticize and hate another and then impose their own religion on them under humanitarian aid? Christian missionaries have been doing this for centuries by destroying the indigenous cultures and traditions of the countries and people they claim to help. Don't they ever learn? It's arrogant and delusional.

This seems to be common. Why am I more educated and aware of what is in the bible than Christians are? This is baffling to me. It's like they haven't even read the book! I'm no scholar on biblical history, but come on! If you're going around all high and mighty and preaching the bible and stuff, you should at least read the material you impose on the rest of us. I mean, don't these religious people feel embarrassed or even ashamed that a lowly 'infidel" like me knows more about the bible and the word of god than they do? o___O

Well, I guess I finally finished this abandoned painting. You may remember this from this post. This painting was based on these reference pictures provided by </a></b></a>magical_krystal in fantasy_models . That was a long time ago... I found the unfinished painting lying around in a big pile of other unfinished paintings.

Recently, I participated in a teamwork challenge! It was very cool. A group of mermaid artists joined up for artistic collaborations. One person would do a drawing and another person would colour and paint it. The results have been wonderful! It is really cool to see how each artist's style emerges from the art!

Well, I did a drawing and inked some of it. Then I mailed it over to geckoartist who then painted (and what an improvement!) it.

This was my original drawing. bah!

This is my drawing enhanced and beautifully painted by the talented Aubry Chapman!

I think she really improved the face. I like her expression so much more after Aubry painted it. I love it! It's gorgeous! I secretly procrastinated on mailing her my sketch because I was so dissatisfied with it. WOW! I think it's beautiful now!

Cho was a crazy, murderous bastard.

What can I say about the Virgina Tech shooting that hasn't already been said? Not much.

Just what is wrong with stricter regulations concerning guns? Would it be such a bad thing if there were more limits on who and when an individual can own a gun or how many guns and bullets they can purchase? Does anyone really need to own automatic weapons like ak-47s? Guns are made to kill.

I'm tired of the hunting argument. Hunting is cruel. And dangerous as demonstrated by Dick Cheney.

Guns are dangerous and even The Secret Service has accidents. Yet there are people who think more guns are needed so people can engage in shoot outs on public streets in the name of defense. Can you imagine a frat party at 2am with a bunch of drunken people with guns? The amount of "accidentals" or "misunderstandings" that could result with fatalities is too horrifying.

I'm tired of the ol' "if guns are banned then cars should be banned too because they kill people too!" Here's the thing. Cars are not built with the intention to kill. Guns are made with the intent to kill and injure. That is their sole purpose.

And no, I am not arguing to change the precious American constitution, but how about a little more rational thinking? Why can 12 year old kids can buy guns?

Why is there so much resistance to rational thinking and reasonable suggestions?

Yes, yes, crazy people who want to kill will find a way to do it, but try not to make it so easy for them. If crazy Cho can get a gun easily, then terrorists can get a gun just as easily. Is that not scary enough to reconsider gun regulations?

Meanwhile, in Iraq such violent homicides happen EVERYDAY. (Saddam is dead. How about going after bin Laden Mr. Bush?? Remember that guy??! How about leaving Iraq alone and letting the people mourn the thousands of deaths that have occurred and letting Iraqi's have the dignity to rebuild their country, hmmmmm?! It's their country!)

The white house and media are just up in glee because this terrible event will be a convenient distraction from Iraq, women's rights, corrupt attorney generals, Walter Reed, etc...etc... They will milk this dry waiting for the next Anna Nicole mystery.

I've always hated those stupid David and Goliath T-shirts. They are ugly and not very funny at all. I see them selling for ridiculous prices downtown.

I hate them even more now. And this is why.

I can't believe this guy got away with this behavior for so long. HE CALLS HIMSELF AN "ARTIST"! I am appalled that he would put himself in the same league with those that create their OWN art!

He's been selling these stupid paintings for thousands of dollars to stupid, ignorant rich people. He's been fawned over in pretentious art galleries. He's been making millions selling t-shirts with other people's art!

It's just so arrogant.

Long Time No Post

I got into that mood again where I feel like everything has lost significance compared to the crazy stuff happening in the world. Everything I write seems trivial.

Can someone please explain this to me? WTF is going on? People buy and wear this? o___O Considering how the American government treated prisoners at Abu Ghraib and how the Iranian government treated the British hostages, social commentary such as that makes me want to puke.

Back to my little world.

I never had a fast enough computer to be able to digitally paint with the tablet. I'd try, but the lag would be so bad I'd give up. Now I do have a fast enough computer, but when I tried to paint, there was still lag.... until now.

I dunno what happened (well, I did reinstall os x and cleaned up the computer after the nasty hard drive incident a few weeks ago). Having enough ram now I decided to give it another shot... and photoshop is responding nicely. There is still tons of lag when I want to use the smudge tool but who cares if the brush is working so wonderfully! (I don't care now, but I have a feeling I will in the future). These paintings were done with just the airbrush tool.

My first goof off:

Way better I think. Mostly painted while watching The Daily Show.

Digital painting is way faster than actually painting. And way cleaner too. Having control over each layer of paint and also having the "free-transform" tool sure makes it a lot easier. I haven't decided if this is a good thing or a bad thing. It certainly makes me sloppy and less accurate knowing I can change the proportions and I can always "undo". I have to get familiar with the other brushes and tools in photoshop. Using only the airbrush just doesn't bring any texture to the painting.

The paintings themselves are nothing to write home about, but I am pleased with my use of the tablet with photoshop and for my first tries, they aren't so bad. This also makes me realize even more that I'm better at painting than drawing.

We played the Wii at Brenden's house this weekend. I am hooked! Where the heck can I find one? I've been faithfully and regularly checking out Zellers, Toys R Us, EB Games, etc...etc... I'll even buy one at Walmart if I have to even though I've been successfully boycotting it for months.

I hate racism, homophobia and misogyny. I also hate it when people stoop to that level to insult. Why are those people so evil? And the phrase, "Compassionate Conservative" is the most ridiculous thing ever. Compassionate to who? Other selfish bastards? (Please excuse my horrid language... I just don't know of a better word to describe these people).
